Are you rich?
If I piled up everything I've worried about in life, from whether I could or should have children to whether the rat in the garden could get into the house, the biggest pile by a mile would be money.
I’ve worried about it, on reflection, for absolutely no purpose. Reassuringly, I'm not alone in this particular neurosis - especially in budget week.
The Times reports this week that people who don't consider themselves rich include:
83% of people with over £1m in cash savings
93% of people who've paid off their homes
90% of people earning £100k–£125k (top 5% in the UK)
76% of people earning over £125k (top 4%)
Meanwhile, at a recent Tesla shareholder meeting, Elon Musk claimed his humanoid Optimus robot would make everyone rich by performing surgery better than humans. (So many questions…)
Musk's vision of “sustainable abundance” promises a world where robots do the work and we all live on universal income.
At the same meeting, Musk secured himself a potential trillion-dollar pay-out.
This from the man who bans working from home, demands “hardcore” hours and celebrates sleeping in the office.
When we look around, the most miserable people are often the wealthiest.
And the happiest? The people in a normal house who get on with each other, enjoy their kids, volunteer locally, work outdoors and don't need immediate surgery.
What does that mean for work?
If you can make good relationships and good work possible, then money isn't and won't be the only measure of success.
